Monday 6th May – Relax,wi-fi at Mc Don. Little travelling and walk – hot and sunny :)

We got bitten to death doing our exercises but we persevered – it was also 22 degrees by 10am! After breakfast we left the Aire and headed into La Franqui to fill up with water. Went to Sigean to Lidl and then to McDonalds for wifi. Spent a couple of hours trying to find a gps by trawling the internet and contacting various people who may be able to help on facebook. Lovely Patrick from Belgium and as mad a speed sailor as me was soooooo helpful - he rang the shop in Gruissan and several other places before coming back on the phone – actually ringing us to say he hadn’t been able to find one anywhere in the area but suggesting buying a different sort and then selling it when we get home. He is such a lovely man. We left McD’s and travelled our favourite route up into the Corbieres. It is truly stunning with the hills, vibrant spring green vines and the blue sky setting it off beautifully :) We stopped for lunch at the same bridge we stopped at last autumn and instead of sitting on the bridge watching eels (too much water at the moment) we walked down a little path and sat on the river bank. We read and it was nice to be out of the heat – 29 degrees by now! We took the opportunity to wash the van and Mag tried to mend the one remaining folding chair but it is too far gone so they are now both unusable! What a waste of euros that was! Sadly just as we were about to leave a lady came along in her car and said (but not in a cross way) that it was Prives:( so we left there and drove on to the Chateau d’Aguilar where we knew we could park right in the hills for the night as again we were here last autumn. We relaxed for a bit while it was too hot then walked up to the old ruined chateau and watched the sunset :) It is not quite so beautiful as in the autumn because the vines are green instead of all the autumn colours. We do have a cracking view of the snow covered Mt Canigou though :)

Tuesday 7th May – relax and walk *** - sunny periods

We spent the whole day on our lovely hillside in the Corbieres. Lots of reading, snoozing and eating! Enjoyed the views over the countryside to Canigou and where we are parked have lots of flowers and herbs so smells lovely. We did our exercises and also went for quite a long hike over to another ruin Mag had noticed on our way here. It was quite a steep hillside through vineyards and when we got there we were not sure whether it was private or not. There wasn’t a recognised footpath up to it but we went anyway and were surprised that at the top there was a tiny cottage with an old English registration car in the drive. It looked pretty deserted so we carried on through the overgrown footpath and had a look at the ruin then ate our lunch in the grounds before sneaking back out. Walked down to an interesting looking bridge which turned out to be over a dry riverbed but through doing that met three English (from Stockport) hikers who were doing the Cathare walk over three days. They had a house in Prades and had come for ten days. We chatted to them all the way back and they carried on down the hill to Tuchan, their overnight stop. We went for another short walk down the edge of a vineyard and back along the road later in the afternoon and saw a huge buzzard/eagle, we are still rubbish at telling the difference! There are lots of nightingales and cuckoos round here but no swifts and swallows whatsoever so they obviously follow the coast north and this is too far over for them. It clouded up later but is still warm :) Had pork for tea and used some of the herbs outside :)
